The Dream Water of Cimarroncita
The Dream Water of the Cimarron River at Cimarroncita offers one of the healthiest dominant wild brown trout populations in New Mexico. Our 1.8 mile stretch of the Dream Water offers a variety of environments to both beginner and advanced anglers. This sinuous stretch with the shade of alder, ponderosa pine and cottonwood trees averages ten to fifteen feet wide and one to three feet deep at normal flows and offers a full list of prime river characteristics: fast riffles, deep runs, bend pools, undercut banks, a spring creek tributary, fast and slow channels and pockets. Guided novice and experienced anglers have exhilarating days on the river, enjoying our heritage lodging and delicious meals and waking to the promise of a full day of a peaceful and private adventure on the river.
The robust brown trout population is created by the diverse insect population of the Cimarron River. From April through September anglers can count on at least five different stonefly hatches, 11 different caddisfly hatches and countless different mayfy hatches along with midges and a host of terrestrials. A thick golden stonefly hatch begins in early June and moves up the river through June into early July. During these periods of insect activity, higher daily fish catches are possible. The abundant insect hatches combined with the shallow water makes the Cimarron at Cimarroncita a premier dry fly fishery.
Our catch and release water is managed for optimal fishery habitat. We require barbless flies and rest the river between guest visits. Our private water and riparian zone are constantly monitoried for conservation purposes and to provide the best possible fishing experience for our guests.
